Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center is a world-renowned museum
affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution is one of the 8 Wonders of Reno County.
FROM THE MOMENT visitors enter the Cosmosphere, they are utterly
astounded.
The lobby explodes with
jaw-dropping air and space vehicles,
like an SR-71 Blackbird spy plane and a
full-scale space shuttle replica. But that’s just the start. As they journey on, there’s a universe full of family fun and education to discover.
 Hall of Space Museum.
One of the most significant collections of space artifacts in the world, and the largest collection of Russian artifacts outside of Moscow, are right here in this Smithsonian-affiliated Museum. The story of the rocket, from its beginnings as a German war weapon to the climactic Apollo moon missions is unfolded, including how the rocket shaped the post World War II era, became a symbol of the Cold War, and set the stage for one of the most dramatic showdowns in human history – the space race.
Artifacts include a rare German V-2 rocket, Russian Vostok spacecraft, the Liberty Bell 7, Gemini X, the Apollo XIII command module Odyssey, and much more. The Museum is an inspiring
testament to the power of human
ingenuity visitors greatly appreciate.

Kansas Underground Salt Museum
IT’S A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE -- truly
unlike any other. A project of the
Reno County Historical Society, the
Kansas Underground Salt Museum
provides the only opportunity of this kind
in the Western Hemisphere.
After a 90-second descent straight
down on a double-decked elevator,
the doors open and you’re 650 feet
under the Kansas prairie surrounded by
salt deposits formed 275 million years
ago. This exotic subterranean world is
as comfortable as it is fascinating --
always 68 degrees with
45% relative humidity.

 The historical,
geological, and cultural
story of salt comes to
life with dramatic
displays. Most visitors
also choose to take
the Dark Ride, a tram
tour through the maze
of chambers created
by years of mining.
This is still a
working salt mine,
although the Salt
Museum area is
far from the active
mining activity.

The mine is also the home of Underground Vaults and Storage, a secured site that is entrusted to protect a wide range of valuable materials including the original film of many of the greatest movies. A special Museum gallery illustrates the Underground Vaults facility and includes an on-going exhibit of actual costumes worn in movies such as Mr. Freeze and Batman, James Dean’s shirt from Giant, Agent Smith from Matrix, and the Snowman from Jack Frost.
 The Museum is open Tuesday
through Saturday 9:00 am to 6:00 pm,
Sundays 1:00 to 6:00.
The Museum also
opens some Monday
holidays which are
posted on the web
site. During the winter,
Museum closing time
is 5:00 pm.
Because access
to the Salt museum
is limited by elevator
capacity, advanced
reservations are
recommended to ensure a timely visit.
The elevator runs on a regular basis
throughout the day with the last tour
departing 2 hours before closing.
In addition to your underground
adventure, take time to admire Engine
#2 outside the Visitors Center. This
vintage workhorse, now part
of the Reno County Historical
Society collection, served Carey
Salt Company on its 5 1⁄2 mile
long Hutchinson & Northern
Railway from 1928 until 1963.

Salt Discovery Site & Memorial Marker
Salt was first discovered near the city
of South Hutchinson on the morning
of September 27, 1887. Soon after
the discovery, a salt “boom” took
the area by storm. By 1910, more than
26 salt companies had been founded in
this area.
A giant block of salt is on display,
and the original well has been
uncapped, to focus attention on one of
the most important industries in South
Central Kansas.
The site is located 1/4 mile west
of Main Street on Des Moines West
Avenue in South Hutchinson. |
