Kansas State Fair

For 10 straight days each year “It’s
a wild ride, baby” when Fair time
rolls around. From racing pigs to a
spectacular midway, it’s wholesome
family fun. This nearly century-old
tradition is one of the 8 Wonders of
Reno County.
The Kansas State Fair always opens
the first Friday after Labor Day, so in
2010 “the wild ride” runs September 10
through 19.
While there are still plenty of the
attractions patrons have come to know
and love, The Fair’s renovations and
upgrades present a variety of new
experiences. Cottonwood Court offers
tasty fare from food vendors in an airconditioned
setting, and an interactive
fountain provides fairgoers of all ages
with a fun way to beat the heat.
Hot contemporary, as well as top
country acts and classic rock,
can be found at the Sprint
Grandstand evening shows
while free entertainment
keeps toes-a-tappin’ over
at the three free stages.
There are also strolling acts
all around the fairgrounds.
Although it’s never
difficult to find fun and
frivolity at The Fair, it also
offers vast opportunities
for learning. Kansas’
Largest Classroom is
an innovative education
program that allows
teachers to integrate the unique scope
of The Fair into a learning experience
that is possible only at such a multifaceted
event.
The NJCAA National Basketball Tournament
The National Junior College Athletic Association’s Championship in Men’s
Division I basketball is a 62-year
Hutchinson tradition.
Every March, 16 teams gather here
to compete in the double elimination
tournament conducted in Hutchinson’s
Sports Arena for the national title. It
presents an opportunity to not only see
great action, but to preview players who
later star at the Division I college level
and even in the NBA.
Ticket availability and other
information is on The Tournament website - www.njcaabbtrny.org
The 2010 tournament runs March 16-20, at the
Hutchinson Sports Arena
NJCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship
For the second year, Hutchinson’s
Gowans Stadium is hosting the
National Junior College Athletic
Association Division I Men’s and
Women’s Outdoor Track and Field
Championship.
This national event had its start in
1939. To this day, some of the most
competitive track and field athletes in
the world participate at NJCAA colleges.
For example, there were numerous
NJCAA
student-athletes representing
the U.S. at the 2008 Olympics including
four from Kansas community colleges,
with two of those becoming medalists.
The 2010 Championships will again
undoubtedly feature future national and
international standouts in the potential
field of over 1,900 student-athletes. The 2010 event runs May 20-22.
The Hutchinson Monarchs
Going out to the ball park in Carey
Park has long been a summer
tradtion here, dating back to the days
Hutchinson had a minor league team
affiliated with the Pittsburg Pirates.
Now baseball fans have the Monarchs
playing at Hobart-Detter Field. The team is
in the Walter Johnson League, established
over 30 years ago for aspiring college
athletes. It is affiliated with the National
Baseball Congress (NBC).
The Monarch’s web site has the team
roster, schedule, and ticket information.
