Technique Manufacturing began in 1990 with 6 employees. In 1994, Ted Robinson came to Technique to take a position with the plan to become the future owner. Ted’s early responsibilities included helping bridge the gap between sales and production to help with efficiency of the business. By 1996, Ted was a 50% shareholder and in 2019 took over as 100% owner, just before the pandemic began.

They specialize in building custom commercial grade cabinets. When Ted came on, their business model was 75% work for Dillons and 25% general contractors. Ted has successfully worked to switch this model to provide for less risk. When he started, all projects were sketched by hand, now it's on AutoCAD.

Technique Manufacturing is the only millwork company left in Hutchinson since the 2008 recession. They must compete on a regional level which is also difficult. They contribute their survival to smarter business practices and also to the knowledge they have gained from being a member for over 25 years with AWI (Architectural Woodwork Institute) which they qualify for their specifications and standards. Their custom cabinets and countertop work can be found at Dillons, banks, schools, medical providers, and at our Chamber office! What is unique, is much of their work is pre-assembled. Think IKEA, then think the opposite.

Workforce is the number one challenge they face. It is difficult to find skilled millwork employees, so they must train them. They have been successful in this training model since theyhave had several employees retire after 20+ years of service and still have 20+ year experienced workers on staff. Technique Manufacturing has hired many at-risk employees and have taught them a trade which has made their futures brighter than ever. They also credit their success and longevity by hiring family with like goals and passion for the company.

At Technique Manufacturing, they offer competitive pay, PTO, retirement, and a benefits package. When business is good, generous bonuses are given around the end of the year.

Technique Manufacturing has been a member of the Chamber since 1993, they donate to United Way and most others that approach them. Ted also serves on the board for the Reno County Drug Free Alliance.
