Jarrod Bornholdt’s Great Grandfather Vernon Bornholdt was a big horse guy and started Bornholdt Feed and Seed in 1943 at 4th & Walnut. Besides selling horse feeds and other livestock feeds, they also had gardening seeds as well and a few tomato plants.  Once Jarrod’s grandfather, Jim, returned from the Korean War and started helping they continued adding more products including fertilizers and weed killers, shade trees and evergreens.  In 1959, they moved locations to 1518 West 4th and continued growing and adding a bigger selection of retail products and landscaping services.  In 1967 Vern retired and Jim took over and changed the name to Plantland. Later Jim’s son (Jarrod’s father) Gary joined the company and they continued to grow the business and added more services and products. In 1986, Jim retired and Gary took over.  Jarrod joined his father at Bornholdt Plantland since returning from college in 2001. They continue to offer the majority of the products and services from the past along with tree and shrub spraying, tree injections, landscape maintenance and still have quite a variety of gardening products.

Bornholdt Plantland strives to carry the highest quality of fertilizers and products along with the best flowers, trees, and shrubs for the region.  Jarrod believes their best service is knowledge.  They know the products they sell so when you leave Plantland you can rest assured you have the best product for whatever job you are tackling.  They help customers understand that all yards are different, and it’s imperative to know sunlight and water requirements for the plant material as well as mature sizes so customers have the right trees and shrubs for their particular yard.  Knowledge also plays into their install and service side, so the customer can rest assured no matter the size of their project, it gets done the right way the first time and they'll understand future care as well to protect their investment.

As people now have access to more project ideas through internet and social media, it becomes a bit of a challenge to help a customer understand that a landscaping or yard project may or may not work due to local climate or space in their yard.  The internet also provides an abundance of knowledge and answers that can help customers, BUT can also be false or incorrect usually due our region of climate and surroundings.

Jarrod believes its important to always be on our "A" game when it comes to knowing new varieties of material and new CORRECT ways of doing things so we as a company still know the best answers and advice to give to our customers.

Bornholdt Plantland is a member of the Chamber, the Hutchinson Horticulture Club, Hutchinson Builders Association, Kansas Nursery & Landscape Association, and Kansas Turfgrass Foundation.

When asked about one thing that sets them apart is their friendly and knowledgable staff, who are willing to go above and beyond to take care of their customers.
