The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to present the Small Business Award to A5 Western, a remarkable company that has truly made its mark in Reno County and beyond.

Michael Anderson, the founder, has been in the western industry since 1991, working both in retail and wholesale, giving him unique insight into the business. In 2010, he and his wife Janey decided to open their own store. Their journey led them to McPherson, Kansas, where they found the perfect location for their business. They acted quickly, and opened their store within 45 days, and have been serving the community ever since. In 2019, they expanded into Hutchinson with their current downtown Hutch store, and it has allowed them to meet the growing demand for work boots and western wear, becoming the largest stocking work boot dealer in central Kansas.

Starting with just two employees, the business now supports five full-time and four part-time staff members. A5 Western has seen a 110% increase in sales since expanding to Hutchinson, driven by a strong vision to provide quality products and customer service. They've also become the largest flame-resistant apparel dealer in Kansas, drawing customers from over 100 miles away. Future plans include the potential for a third location, as the company continues to build on its success.

A5 Western stands out for offering a wide selection of top western brands, alongside excellent pricing and customer service. Their commitment to providing the best shopping experience means they not only meet their customers’ needs but also to keep business within the community.

Like any business, A5 Western has faced its challenges. From shifting trends in the western industry to the operational hurdles that come with expansion, they have learned the importance of adaptability. Whether it’s changing boot styles or expanding product offerings, A5 Western stays ahead by listening to their customers and continuously evolving to meet market demands.

Employee retention is another area where A5 Western excels. With a staff of eight, including four long-term employees, they offer benefits like clothing and fuel allowances, and foster a supportive, family-like environment. They’re even planning to send employees to a specialized training clinic in Texas. Michael’s advice to other small business owners? Be loyal to your employees, and they will return that loyalty.

Community involvement is a cornerstone of A5 Western’s business philosophy. The company sponsors numerous events across Kansas, from rodeos to fairs, and supports local youth programs. Offering discounts to 4H and FFA members, they make sure to invest in the future of the community.

Finally, Michael measures success not only in financial terms but also in the loyalty of his customers and the growth of his team. What started as a small, family-run business has blossomed into an essential part of the local economy. The most rewarding aspect? Providing jobs and supporting families, while being a trusted resource for their customers through both happy and difficult times.

A5 Western is more than just a store—it’s a community partner, a family-oriented business, and a symbol of local pride. Please join me in congratulating A5 Western on their tremendous success and their well-deserved recognition as the September Small Business Award winner!
