Sugar Creek Boutique Receives Small Business Award
Thursday, May 22, 2025

The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to present the May Small Business Award to Sugar Creek Boutique.
Sugar Creek Boutique’s story began where cattle and creativity met — at livestock shows with Shelby’s family. Noticing a lack of retail options for women at these events, Shelby saw an opportunity. What started as a small rack of clothing at a cattle show quickly grew into a full-fledged boutique, following the family to craft fairs and the Kansas State Fair. Shelby’s entrepreneurial spirit took a bold leap in 2020, when she left her full-time retail job to focus solely on building the Sugar Creek brand. Even amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, she rose to the occasion — launching an online store, hosting Facebook Live sales, and eventually opening a brick-and-mortar location at the Hutchinson Mall. Today, the boutique calls North Main Street home — a move that marked a major milestone in its journey.
Sugar Creek Boutique has experienced steady growth. Shelby, once a one-woman operation juggling inventory, marketing, and web design, now has a team of three part-time employees. Together, they manage a thriving storefront, a strong online presence, and even international sales — yes, Sugar Creek has officially gone global!
Sugar Creek Boutique is set apart by their distinct style — a fusion of rustic western charm and modern flair, offering clothing, accessories, footwear, and even Chiefs gear in sizes ranging from small to 3XL. Inclusivity, affordability, and authenticity are the heartbeat of the boutique.
But the story doesn't stop with business success. Shelby is a passionate community advocate. In 2024, she launched the “Face the Storm” fund with Partridge Community Church, donating $10 from every apparel item sold to support those facing health and personal challenges. Sugar Creek Boutique also supports countless local causes — from 4H and United Way to local schools and FFA programs. As Shelby says, “There is power in shopping local, and Sugar Creek is proud to put our money where our heart is.”
As a leader and employer, Shelby fosters a work culture grounded in teamwork and fun. While traditional benefits may not be on the table yet, team members enjoy bonuses, store credit incentives, flexible schedules, and — most importantly — a workplace that feels like family.
Shelby defines success not just by sales, but by the impact Sugar Creek makes on its community, customers, and team. Her advice to future entrepreneurs? Support those who support you, and don’t forget to have fun while doing it.
So today, we are proud to recognize a business built on resilience, relationships, and a whole lot of heart.
