Inland Ocean Vineyards Receives Small Business Award

It is the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce’s pleasure to recognize Inland Ocean Vineyards as the June Small Business of the Month.

When owner Dr. Jim Lairmore reflects on how he got started in the wine business, he often jokes that it was “a series of bad decisions.” Fortunately for Reno County, those decisions led to the creation of something truly remarkable.

What began nearly 40 years ago as a hobby with a few grapevines in his backyard has grown into a thriving vineyard and winery with more than 1,200 vines spread across two acres. Today, Inland Ocean Vineyards produces nearly 3,500 bottles of wine annually, with every bottle made exclusively from grapes grown on the property.

That commitment to authenticity is what sets Inland Ocean Vineyards apart. In an industry where many wineries rely on imported grapes, frozen juice, or bulk wine, Dr. Lairmore made an early commitment to avoiding shortcuts. From vine to bottle, every step of the process takes place right here in Reno County, creating a truly local agricultural product crafted with both science and passion.

While Dr. Lairmore’s background as a surgeon may seem like an unusual path to winemaking, the precision, discipline, and attention to detail he developed in medicine have helped establish a winery known for quality and consistency. From selecting the right yeast to monitoring fermentation and perfecting the aging process, every detail matters.

The winery continues to grow and evolve. Inland Ocean wines are now available at local retailers, including Sandhills Brewing, DJ Liquor, and Temaat’s. Currently under construction is a beautiful new event center that will accommodate up to 150 guests, creating opportunities for local caterers, florists, food trucks, event staff, and other small businesses throughout the community.

Beyond its business success, Inland Ocean Vineyards remains deeply committed to giving back. Dr. Lairmore and his family support numerous local organizations and events, invest in community partnerships, and exemplify what it means to be a community-minded business.

Dr. Lairmore often says that winemaking is about constantly striving for “better,” and that philosophy is evident in everything Inland Ocean Vineyards does.
