September 2026 Small Business Award

It is the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce's pleasure to recognize our September Small Business of the Month, Great Plains Family Medicine.

At the heart of Great Plains Family Medicine is Dr. Andrea Herrera, a medical doctor who had a vision for practicing medicine a little differently.

While working in a traditional hospital clinic, Dr. Herrera found that the pace of medicine often left very little time for what she believed mattered most—getting to know her patients, truly listening to them and building relationships. After being introduced to the direct primary care model, she realized there was another way to practice medicine that better aligned with her values.

So, in 2015, Dr. Herrera took a leap of faith and opened her first location in McPherson. She leads the medical side of the practice, while her husband, Pete, manages the business side. Together, they have built a practice that has grown to additional locations and expanded services, all while keeping personalized patient care at the center.

Great Plains Family Medicine’s direct primary care model gives patients a more personal and transparent healthcare experience. With a simple monthly membership, patients have longer visits, direct access to their physician and significantly reduced costs for labs and medications.

But what really sets Great Plains Family Medicine apart is the time they give their patients.

For Dr. Herrera, success isn't measured simply by the size of the practice. It's measured by hearing a patient say, “You listened to me. You understood me.” It's about helping people stay healthy, navigate a complicated healthcare system and making quality care more accessible—especially for those who may be underserved or underinsured.

That same philosophy carries over to her team. Great Plains Family Medicine has created a supportive and flexible workplace, with several employees who have been part of the team for many years. Dr. Herrera and her staff also give back to the community through health fairs and partnerships that help connect people with the healthcare and resources they need.

Great Plains Family Medicine is a wonderful example of a small business that saw an opportunity to do something differently—and had the courage to build it.
