Sturgeon Plumbing and Air Receives Small Business Award
Wednesday, August 20, 2025
The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to present the August Small Business Award to Sturgeon Plumbing and Air. Ron Sturgeon began his career at Stevens, Inc., where he worked for 16 years. But the day after his youngest daughter was born, Ron learned the company was closing its doors. With a young family to care for, Ron decided to take a leap of faith. Drawing on his experience, he started his own HVAC business — and soon realized the importance of adding plumbing as well. With guidance from mentors and referrals from loyal customers, Ron built Sturgeon Plumbing and Air Conditioning into what it is today.
What began as a one-man operation has grown into a business employing nine people — with up to 20 at one time — and a proud history of working on many of Hutchinson’s most recognized projects. Their work can be seen at the Cosmosphere, Hutchinson Community College, City Hall, the Hutchinson Airport, the Sports Arena, Tyson, local schools, churches, and countless other projects that strengthen our community.
Sturgeon Plumbing and Air Conditioning stands apart because of the expertise of their team — with more than 100 years of combined experience. That experience often saves customers money and keeps older systems running when others might recommend full replacement. Their reputation is built on service, trust, and a commitment to doing the job right.
The business also values its people. Ron’s team has remarkable longevity — every employee has been with the company at least five years, with one serving for more than 25. As Hutchinson’s only union plumbing and HVAC provider, Sturgeons offers excellent benefits, retirement plans, and a positive workplace culture… even including the occasional nerf gun war!
Beyond their business success, Sturgeon Plumbing and Air Conditioning invests deeply in our community. They’ve supported Hutchinson schools, SkillsUSA, Hutchinson Community College, and relief efforts after local wildfires. Their employees are active volunteers as well, from fire safety education to mentoring students in the trades.
When asked how he measures success, Ron points to the accomplishments of his team and the opportunity to serve families and businesses across Reno County. He says the most rewarding part has been building something that not only supports the community, but also helped him raise his family and give them a good start in life.
